Tinted Lenses Guide

When people talk about tinted contact lenses they are normally referring to lenses that change the colour of your eyes. However, in actual fact they have a number of other uses. these lenses.

There are different tinted lenses for different purposes:

  • Tints that enhance the colour of your eye but do not change it completely
  • Visibility tints to help you find your lenses if you drop them which do not affect your eye colour
  • Colour tints which change your eye colour completely
  • Special effects lenses that transform your eyes to make them look cat or alien like, for example
  • Light filtering tints to help sportspeople see the ball more clearly

Interestingly, many of these lenses are available to people who do not need any kind of vision correction, in the form of “ plano” lenses. However tinted contact lenses can also contain a prescription.

Light Filtering Tinted Lenses

Bausch & Lomb have just launched a revolutionary product in conjunction with Nike called MaxSight.

These are soft tinted contacts that act like sunglasses by filtering out UVA, UVB and blue light. This makes colours seem to be less bright which helps people playing sports to see more clearly.

However, unlike sunglasses they sit directly on the wearer’s eye which reduces visual distortion and gives clear vision from all angles.

Furthermore, unlike sunglasses, Nike MaxSight tinted lenses do not cloud up in humidity or scratch easily (unless you do not take proper precautions when putting them in or taking them out).

They are particularly useful for baseball players as the small white ball has a tendency to be hidden by the sun’s glare. By reducing the brightness of the sun, they help players to see moving baseballs more easily.

These light filtering tinted lenses come in two colours; amber and grey-green. The former works best for sports involving a fast moving ball, like tennis and baseball. However, the grey-green lenses are good for people playing sports like rugby and golf.

According to a Nike spokesperson, the company is expecting that the MaxSight contact lenses will be most popular amongst high school and college athletes looking for a competitive edge.

However, Nike MaxSight contact lenses are also proving popular with professional athletes as well. For instance, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, 2005 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year, has spoken to us to arrange a fitting.

Sharing Tinted Lenses

Although it might seem tempting to swap tinted lenses with your friends so that you can experiment with new looks, it is not advisable to do so. This is because sharing lenses can lead to contracting an eye infection because lenses attract the build up of bacteria.
